Help for Heroes Lunch

One hundred and twenty people, made up of Companions of the Vale of Loddon Chapter and their friends and relatives, gathered at The Long Gallery, Englefield House, Englefield, Nr Pangbourne, Berkshire on Sunday 23rd May for a fund raising luncheon in support of the Help for Heroes Charity.

The Long Gallery accommodated 12 tables of 10 diners per table and each table was hosted by a Companion of the Vale of Loddon Chapter. Each table hosted, as Guests of Honour, a serving member of The Rifles Regiment and his loved one. Quite a change of scenery from Afghanistan where most of the soldiers had recently served!

The speaker at the occasion was Mike Cowan, an after-dinner speaker renowned in sporting circles, who once shared an opening attack for Yorkshire County Cricket Club with the legendary Fred Trueman.

Toby North, himself an ex-Officer in the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry one of the former regiments recently merged to form The Rifles, and Ian Savage, First Principal of the Vale of Loddon Chapter co-organised the event.

“It was never enough merely to raise money for Help for Heroes, worthy though that cause most certainly is” stated Ian. “What was every bit as important was the visible and outward expression of the admiration and respect we feel towards our serving men and women.”

Guests at the function were entertained by the Salamanca Band ( 6 Rifles ) under the direction of Major Ian Peaple, Director of Music, and by Bugle Major Cox of 4 Rifles who gave an explanation of the historical development of the Bugle within Light Infantry Regiments.

The gathering took place by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Richard Benyon. Richard Benyon is MP for Newbury and has recently been appointed Parliamentary Under – Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Thanks to the work put in by Toby and Ian, the function was a great success and raised the sum of £3000.
